Listening, without the internet

Every chapter can be read aloud, with each word lighting up as it’s read. Michael’s narration is recorded and comes with the app. The other narrators, Hannah, Arthur, Claire, Samuel, Caleb and Eleanor, are spoken by your iPhone or iPad itself, using a voice model built into the app (the same one that recorded Michael). Nothing downloads and nothing streams, so listening works anywhere, even in Airplane Mode.

To choose a voice, open Settings → Listening → Narrators. Settings is the gear button at the top of the home screen. Tap Hear for a short sample, then Select. While you’re listening, you can also tap the narrator’s name to switch.

Changing the text size

While reading, tap the button at the top right. Drag the slider, or tap the small and large A, to pick a size from 14 to 34. The same panel sets Pages or Scroll, line spacing, and dark or light. You’ll find all of these in Settings → Reading too.

The Listen side has its own text size: tap the same button while listening, or go to Settings → Listening.

Reading plans and reminders

Start a plan from the Reading plans card on the home screen, or from Settings → Reading plans. There are nine to choose from, from the whole Bible to the Psalms. Pick how long to take, when to start and which days you read, then tick off each reading as you go, whether you read it or listen to it.

For a reminder, turn on Remind me each reading day and choose a time. The first time, your device asks whether Thomson Bible may send notifications. Reminders are set on your device; nothing is sent to a server. To change or stop them later, open the plan and use the Daily reminder switch. If you said no to notifications, you can allow them in your device’s Settings app, under Notifications → Thomson Bible.

Finding the Greek

While reading, tap any verse. A bar appears at the bottom of the screen: tap Greek. You’ll see Thomson’s English with the Greek it was translated from: the Septuagint for the Old Covenant and the Textus Receptus for the New. Tap a Greek word for its meaning.

The same bar lets you add a note, copy, share, or play from that verse. Tap Done to clear it.

Reading on Android or a computer

The whole Bible is free to read on this website, on any phone, tablet or computer. Open the reader. It remembers your text size, theme and place in that browser. Tap a verse, then Greek, to see the Greek behind each word, as in the app.

Your notes and privacy

There’s no account to make. Your notes, plans and settings are kept only on your device, and we never see them. Deleting the app deletes them too. Read the full Privacy Policy.
